The software for the diagrams was developed by Stefan Odelfalk at Panopticon in cooperation with graphic designers Johan Cnattingius and Stefania Malmsten as part of the visual communication for Liljevalchs Spring Salon 2006.

Instructions

Choose between the following categories: Applicants for The Spring Salon 2006, Accepted to the Spring Salon 2006, Artworks at The Spring Salon 2006 and Visitors to The Spring Salon 2006 (with the visitor’s choice).

Choosing a category takes you to the corresponding diagram. At the top of the diagram page is an arrow that will bring you back to the category selection, and also a drop-down menu. The rest of the page is divided into three areas:

• A rectangular diagram that shows the results of your queries as different fields, counts and percentages.
• A circular diagram with cells that represents the groups created by your query.
• A history of your interactions with the diagrams which you can use to quickly move between the different views you have seen. To undo or redo a single step at a time you can also use the arrows in the top right corner of the window.

A field or cell’s color shows the average color of a specific artwork or an entire group of works. A visitor’s color is determined by which artwork he or she voted for.

How to Use the Drop-Down Menu

Select a word from the drop-down list. The data in the diagrams will be grouped (the left diagram) and divided (the right diagram) according to your choice. The word will also be removed and placed to the left of the menu, letting you easily see your active choice.

You can select multiple words to refine your query. When you want to remove a word and place it back in the drop-down list, click the cross icon next to the word.

How to Select Information

You can double-click anywhere in both of the diagrams to select and display only a portion of the data. The information on the top of the page will change to reflect what you are looking at. To see more of the data again, click one of the underlined words.
